Fourth of July is just around the corner and everyone preparing their favorite meals, activities, and most of all, fireworks! Because fireworks are contained explosives, it’s imperative that the proper safety measures are taken
The first thing you should do is check if your city allows fireworks at all. Some cities like those in Northern California allow only fountains and non-aerial works, while cities in Arizona allow full-fledged mortars and rockets. The fountain types are the most common among California. These are fireworks that do not become airborne and who do not shoot sparks more than ten feet in height. Other states do allow more such as bottle rockets, roman candles and spinners. Asking your city council or, more likely, a police officer will give you a reliable answer.
Fireworks are big business and consumer fireworks are almost everywhere if your state and city allow it. You need to be careful that you buy legal fireworks sold by a state controlled seller. Legal fireworks are clearly marked with labels explaining the safety procedure of lighting them and exactly what the firework does. Illegal fireworks are very common and in high demand, M80’s and M1000’s are the best known and can easily take a hand or arm off a small child. These types of high explosives are also illegal so be on the lookout. Most people obtain these types of illegal fireworks by crossing the border to Mexico or off Indian reservations throughout America. Even if you are using legal fireworks they are still dangerous so parental supervision is recommended at all times. Kids often brn themselves with the most basic of fireworks such as sparklers rather than the larger more dangerous ones. Following basic safety rules will ensure that you have a safe and fun Fourth of July.
