Lauren Conrad, better known as “LC” to fans of reality shows The Hills and Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, premiered her self titled spring collection of fashions at hip LA boutique Intuition on February 5th. Conrad took fashion design classes at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, then transferred to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and spent two years as a Teen Vogue intern while starring on The Hills. She also worked as an intern at Three Dots clothing company in 2005. (Busy girl, huh?) Conrad's interest in fashion design began at a young age when a neighbor taught her to draw and helped her make clothes for a Barbie doll. Intuition owner Jaye Hersh says Conrad’s designs are quite popular, noting, “People bought the pieces in every color.” While some have criticized Conrad’s designs for being uncreative (most of the pieces are monochrome and many are named for her friends like the “Audrina” and “Lo” dresses), Hersh described the fashions as “timeless”. Still, some critics don’t feel the hefty price tag (dresses are around $140) is warranted by a 22 year old neophyte designer’s clothes when similar items are available from fashion giants like Calvin Klein and DKNY. Of course, Hills rival Heidi Montag isn’t a fan, and she’s even got a deal in the works with brand Anchor Blue to design three seasons’ worth of her own fashions for them. Montag also is working on her own fashion line, and tells People magazine, “It’s going to be called Heidiwood, and I’m so excited I can’t even tell you! I want all my fans to be able to buy it. I want to bring that fashionable clothing line down to a price range where people can actually afford it.” Is that a shot at LC’s line’s high prices? What do you think?
